What the spring does
A garage door spring counterbalances the weight of the door. The opener moves a properly balanced door; it should not be expected to lift the full weight when a spring breaks. A door that suddenly feels heavy, opens only a few inches, or has a visible gap in a torsion spring needs professional inspection.
What to do if you suspect a broken spring
Stop operating the door and keep people and vehicles away from its path. Do not keep pressing the opener, pull on cables, loosen brackets, or try to wind a spring. If the door is open or hanging unevenly, keep clear and describe its position when you call. Springs and related hardware can store significant energy.
A spring should fit the door
The replacement depends on the door’s weight, dimensions, track configuration, and the existing spring system. A technician should check the whole counterbalance system, including cables, drums, bearings, and attachment points. Replacing a spring without identifying related damage can leave the original problem unresolved.
If a door has two springs, ask about the condition and age of both. There may be a practical reason to replace a worn pair together, but the recommendation should be explained for your actual door. We separate necessary repairs from optional improvements before you approve work.
Questions to ask about a quote
- Which spring system and parts are being supplied?
- What labor, adjustments, and related repairs are included?
- Will balance and safe operation be checked after the repair?
- What written parts and labor warranty applies, and what are its exclusions?
We do not present every spring as a lifetime product. Ask for the applicable warranty in writing. Spring life varies with use, environment, maintenance, and whether the system is correctly matched to the door.
Spring problem or opener problem?
A working motor with a door that barely lifts can indicate a mechanical problem rather than a failed opener. Inspection helps avoid buying a new motor when the door itself needs repair. Read our opener repair guide for the differences.
Booking a spring inspection
Tell us whether the door is open, closed, crooked, or stuck, and whether you heard a loud bang. Photos can help explain what you see, but a final repair recommendation requires inspecting the system. Two Brothers serves Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley with weekday service appointments.
An inspection before a recommendation.
Tell us what your garage door is doing. We inspect the system, explain your choices, and confirm pricing before you approve work.
